Sexual addiction is an intimacy disorder that can be the outcome of impaired early attachment experiences and childhood trauma. This dysregulated bonding and unresolved trauma causes shame in the developing child. Primary needs and desires become unmet to the individual. Affect regulation also is damaged because of difficult bonding experiences. This further impairs the capacity to master feelings and successfully guide the process of need fulfillment and social engagement. Sexual addiction is a compulsive cycle that attempts to compensate, soothe, and regulate the internal struggle. The cycle, in turn, creates more shame and dysregulation of affect. Strategies to reduce shame, regulate affect, and create sexual boundaries necessary for successful treatment of sexual addiction will be outlined.
After this presentation, attendees will be better able to:
- Identify the biology of addiction and trauma
- List at least 3 types of attachment styles associated with addictive behaviors
- Specify models for treating sex addiction and trauma that increase social engagement and can effectively offer corrective developmental experiences
- Practice at least one way of treating sex addiction through a trauma and attachment lens

When human beings experience childhood trauma, addictions or severe life stressors, it is not uncommon for their lives to fall apart. My great purpose and passion is bringing healing to people who have been through trauma, addiction and major stressful experiences. Our team and I help clients, find healthy perceptions of themselves and strengthen their relationships so they can know themselves as connected, complete, valuable and safe.
I know that there is no one size fits all approach to meet the needs of every individual, and so I have been trained in a range of modalities including Emotionally Focused Therapy, Somatic Transformation, Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing, Sex and Multiple Addiction Treatment, Group Therapy, The Rhythm of Regulation and Reiki to support in the treatment of trauma and addictions.
My educational background includes two Master’s Degrees, one in Education from Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary at Northwestern University and the other in Human Services and Counseling from National-Louis University. My great purpose and passion to bring healing to those trapped in trauma, addiction and negative beliefs have afforded opportunities to provide clinical counseling, corporate training and development, professional training, intervention services, workshop facilitation, and public speaking.
