Program Overview

The 1967 Summer of Love in San Francisco’s Haight Ashbury district focused attention on large numbers of young people experimenting with and enjoying drugs such as marijuana and LSD. Use of harder drugs such as heroin and amphetamines soon became more common, leading to fatal overdoses and long-term addiction. Law enforcement and the legal community took a dim view of all drugs, and the medical community was unprepared and unwilling to deal with them, for the most part.

Since then, addiction medicine has been recognized as a specialized field, and addiction is now viewed as a chronic brain disease. Other advances in the field include Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), acceptance of concurrent disorders, growing integration of addiction screening and treatment into primary medical care, and increasing awareness of the role of genetics and brain chemistry.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to: 

  1. Describe the changing patterns of drug abuse since the Summer of Love in 1967.
  2. Discuss changing treatment techniques and the move from an acute disease model to a chronic disease model.
  3. Outline the major advances since 1967 in understanding the impact of chronic addictive disease on the brain.

He has served as Medical Director, California State Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs, and is Adjunct Professor Emeritus, Institute of Health & Aging, University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Smith has authored and co-authored over 350 professional articles and several books.
